School Outside of School

The Connected Power of Young and OLD
In this 10-week session, composed of cognitive enhancement, physical/medical management, and social activities, we will include both older adults in an ethnically diverse neighborhood and younger adults from DePaul University. The program evaluation that will be conducted throughout the intervention implementation will provide insights for future scale-up efforts.

scoping review project for aging in place

Assessing the needs of aging adults and effective supports
With the global aging population, the majority of who reside in communities, we wanted to assess our current understanding of the types of needs older adults are experiencing and the types of supports that are reported to be effective in regards to promoting aging in place. In addition, we sought to collect information on the typical demographic groups represented in the literature. To achieve these, we aimed to map the current literature and to identify the gaps in research on the needs and supports to promote aging in place of older adults.

The team for this scoping review was composed of Ansuk Jeong, Ph.D. (the PI), Brianna Mabie, Ph.D. (CARE lab alum), Thomas Rice, M.A. (CARE lab alum), Gavin Warner (CARE lab undergrad RA), and Maia Hess (CARE lab alum).

The team conducted a literature search using APA PsycINFO and PubMed for the articles published since the year 2000. Articles were searched using the keywords “aging in place,” “community-dwelling,” “residing in communities,” “needs,” “physical needs,” “emotional needs,” and “social needs” in order to cover potentially various domains of needs that older adults experience while residing in communities. The electronic search strategy began with the collection of articles that were broadly related to the research question until May 2024, but was later refined using specified selection criteria.

As a collective process, the team developed a preliminary data-charting system to identify the variables to extract the information of, which includes the publication year, study type, the needs assessed, and participant characteristics such as residential type, ethnicity, and geographic region. The iterations of data-charting system revision is included in the manuscript submitted to Geriatric Nursing (as of August 2025).
